			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Paul Frederick Garver</strong> passed away on May 4, 2012 at his home in Carolina Trace after a prolonged battle with cancer. Paul was 73 years old. He is survived by his beloved wife Irene, a son Jeffery 43 of Denver, Colorado and a brother George Garver. Additionally, Paul left an extended family of five of his wife’s children, Scott Stanley of Williamsburg, Va., John Stanley of Oakton, Va., Sharon Redwine of Winston-Salem, NC., Dan Stanley of Sanford, NC., and Jeanne Stanley of Rolla, MO.<br />
Paul was born in July of 1938 in Salina, Kansas born to his parents Bernard and Pauline Garver. A veteran of the Navy he later worked as a computer system analyst for McDonnell Douglas aircraft in St. Louis for several years and later became business manager for the Mineral Area Jr. College. He was a graduate of Baylor University MBA program. Additionally, Paul served as director of administration for a large Presbyterian church in Kansas City. Paul and Irene moved to The Trace in Sanford in 2005 and have enjoyed their home and friends. A memorial service for Paul will be held on Saturday, May 12, 11 AM at Morris Chapel United Methodist Church, 8533 Cox Mill Road, Sanford NC. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Morris Chapel or Community Home Care &#038; Hospice of Sanford.</p>

<p>Mr. Martin was born in Covington, Kentucky on September 8, 1942 to the late Walter and Marcella Gosney Martin.  Following  graduation from Covington Holmes High School,  he spent four years in the U.S. Air Force stationed at Fairchild Air Force Base, Spokane, Washington.  He married Lynetta Hatley of Pullman, Washington on October 5, 1963.  </p>
<p>After graduating from the University of Kentucky in 1969 with a bachelor’s degree in economics, Mr. Martin joined the U.S. General Accounting Office (now the Government Accountability Office) and worked in the Cincinnati, Ohio; Frankfurt, Germany;  Los Angeles, California; and Washington, D.C.  offices.  He specialized in International Refugee and Humanitarian Affairs issues which resulted in his visiting and working in 53 different countries over his career.  He received the U.S. GAO Meritorious Service Award in 1991.  </p>
<p>Mr. Martin was a man of strong faith and had a passion for philanthropic work.  He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Sanford and he served as a deacon, elder and Sunday School teacher in various churches over the years.  Having joined the Sanford Lions Club in 2000, he served as Vice President (2003), President (2004), District Governor, 31-F (2008-2009) and New Club Development Consultant for Lions Clubs International.  He helped co-found the Knights for the Blind Charitable Trust which provides financial assistance for visually-impaired individuals when individual clubs are unable to assist them.  Lion Martin held several Lions honors, including the Presidential Certificate of Appreciation and Presidential Leadership Medal.  He was also a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow.</p>
<p>Known as an avid golfer, he also enjoyed woodworking,  bowling, and reading,  particularly Louis L’Amour westerns.  While not easy in the heart of North Carolina basketball country,  he remained ever faithful to his beloved Kentucky Wildcats.  Some of his most cherished times were spent being “Bapa” to his grandson Liam.</p>
<p>He was predeceased  by his parents, his brother Walter, and sisters Joyce Sturgill and Joan Melton.  He is survived by his wife Lynetta of Sanford, daughter Collette (David) Drake, and grandson William “Liam” Drake of Durham, North Carolina.   He is also survived by his brother Roger of  Henderson, Nevada;  his aunt Elsie Martin Carpenter, Florence, Kentucky; numerous cousins, nephews and nieces including Donna (Tim) Smith of Sanford.</p>
<p>A Memorial Service  celebrating Mr. Martin’s life will be held Saturday, May 12 at 12 noon at First Presbyterian Church followed by a time for family to receive friends in The Colonnade.   The Rev. Dr. Arnold Lovell and Wendell McGee, CLP will be officiating. Members of the Sanford Lions Club are asked to sit together.   Burial will be private.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Anthony (Tony) Clyde Brewer, 68, died peacefully at UNC Hospitals April 23, 2012.  </p>
<p>He was born in Wilmington and grew up in Robbins, NC.  He received his BA degree from Atlantic Christian (Barton) College and his graduate degree in history from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.  He served in the US Army from 1967-1970 and retired from a career as an employment counselor with the NC Employment Security Commission in 2005.</p>
<p>Tony was a member of Buffalo Presbyterian Church where he had served as an elder and clerk of session.  He was a commissioned lay preacher in the Presbytery of Coastal Carolina and was also currently serving as vice-president of the NC Presbyterian Historical Society.</p>
<p>Tony held a number of leadership positions within the Occoneechee Council of the Boy Scouts of America, including two terms as Three Rivers District Commissioner.</p>
<p>He was a long-time member and past president of the Lee County Wildlife Club where in recent years he assisted with the Youth Hunter Safety Program.</p>
<p>He was preceded in death by his parents Clyde and Eula Mae Williams Brewer.  He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Sheila M. Brewer, a son Andrew Brewer of Raleigh and a daughter Karen Brewer of Sanford.  Also surviving are a sister, Margaret B. McGill and husband Dan of Fairfax Station, VA.</p>
<p>The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday, April 26, at Buffalo Presbyterian Church, 1333 Carthage Street, Sanford.  Burial will follow in Buffalo Cemetery and the family will greet friends afterwards in the church fellowship hall.</p>
<p>In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Buffalo Presbyterian Church 1333 Carthage Street, Sanford, NC 27330.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Eleanor Fulton King Harvey, 93, of Sanford died March 31, 2012 at Pinehurst Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center Pinehurst, NC.</p>
<p>She was born in Philadelphia, PA on February 15, 1919 a daughter of the late Samuel Alexander King and Eleanor Scouller King. She attended Drexel University in Philadelphia.</p>
<p>Mrs. Harvey was preceded in death by her husband George Aldridge Harvey of North East, MD; her brother Russell Scouller King of Yeadon, PA and her daughter Mary Elizabeth Conklin of New Britain, PA.</p>
<p>She is survived by her daughter Barbara E. Harvey of Phoenix, AZ; son George S. Harvey and his wife Rebekah of Sanford, NC; a nephew Henry E. Harvey, Jr. of North East, MD; five grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.</p>
<p>Mrs. Harvey was a long time resident of North East, MD. She was very active in the North East United Methodist Church as well as several civic organizations. Health reasons prompted her move to Sanford in the spring of 1998.</p>
<p>A private burial for the family will be held on Saturday April 14, 2012. The family will receive friends at 10:00 AM in the Chapel of the North East United Methodist Church. A memorial service will follow in the Church Sanctuary at 11:00 AM.</p>
<p>In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the North East United Methodist Church, 308 S. Main Street, North East, Maryland 21901 or a charity of your choice.</p>
<p>The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Pinehurst Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center for their care and companionship.</p>

William E. Joyner, Jr., (US Army Ret.)</strong> age 48 of Cameron, NC went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 15, 2012 at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford after a courageous battle with cancer.</p>
<p>A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 20, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. at Hillmon Grove Baptist Church in Cameron with Pastor Wayne O’Quinn and Rev. Austin Reason officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at the church cemetery.</p>
<p>He was born on July 19, 1963 in Langdale, AL to the late William E. Joyner Sr., and Vera Godfrey Joyner. He was a member of Hillmon Grove Baptist Church in Cameron.  Mr. Joyner was a veteran of his country and retired from the United States Army in July, 2003. During his service to his country he served in the following units: 193<sup>rd</sup> Infantry Brigade, stationed at Ft. Sherman, Panama; 5<sup>th</sup> Special Forces Group (Airborne), stationed at Ft. Bragg, NC and Ft. Campbell, KY,  serving in Desert Storm; SERE Instructor at Camp Mackall, NC; 10<sup>th</sup> Special Forces Group (Airborne), stationed in Stuttgart, Germany, serving in Bosnia; Special Forces Command (Airborne), stationed at Fort Bragg, NC; and then retired in 2003 after 21 years of service to his country. He then spent a short time as a contractor for Northrop Grumman before returning to Special Forces Command as a civilian employee.  He was an NC Member at Large of the VFW Post # 15034; member of the American Legion Post # 1981 in Raleigh, NC; and member of the Special Forces Association.</p>
<p>William is survived by his wife of 26 years, Luzmila Joyner, and their sons Thomas Joyner and Edward Joyner of Cameron; sister Vera Robinson and her husband Brett of Thomaston, Georgia; sister Nita Mason, her husband Daniel, and children Mary, Emily, and Josh of Sanford; niece Amy of Texas; and niece Sarah of Kentucky. Mr. Joyner was preceded in death by father William E. Joyner Sr., mother Vera G. Joyner, and brother Thomas F. Joyner.</p>
<p>A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 19, 2012 from 6-8 p.m. at Miller-Boles Funeral Home in Sanford.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Jack Manning Cannada</strong>, 78 of Sanford, NC passed away on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at home.</p>
<p>Jack served his country as a member of the Army National Guard achieving the rank of Corporal.  He was a firefighter with the City of Durham Fire Department, retiring after 18 years of service.   He owned and operated the Sea Gull Motel in Atlantic Beach before moving to West Jefferson, N.C.  where he was employed by Lincare Home Medical.</p>
<p>He eventually moved to Pittsboro and Sanford, N.C.</p>
<p>Jack was predeceased by his parents Rupert and Vera Cannada and a brother Ralph Cannada.</p>
<p>He is survived by his wife Delinda Cannada of Sanford, N.C. and a son Phillip Cannada of Rocky Mount, NC</p>
<p>A private family burial will be held Friday at Shallow Well Church, Sanford, NC.</p>
<p>A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 14<sup>th</sup>  at 2:00pm at the New Salem Baptist Church, 5030 Old Graham Rd, Pittsboro, N.C.  The family will receive friends at the Church from 1:00pm – 2:00pm prior to the service.</p>

<p>Hazel was born in Chatham County on October 10, 1928. She was preceded in death by her husband, A.J. Dixon; parents, Charlie and Pearl Brooks; sister, Jo Ann Kirkman.  She was a member of Jonesboro Methodist Church. Hazel was employed for several years with the Lee County School System. She had a great love for children.</p>
<p>She is survived by her son, David Brooks Dixon and wife Lynda; a daughter, Martha Clark and two grandchildren; a sister, Frances Williams and a brother, Charles Brooks also survive her.</p>
<p>A graveside service will be held on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Lee Memory Gardens with Ray Parish officiating.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Ruth Blackwelder Quick</strong> 96 died Wednesday March 28, 2012 at Central Carolina Hospital.  Funeral services will be held 10am Saturday March 31, 2012 at the First Presbyterian Church, with burial to follow in Buffalo Cemetery.</p>
<p>Mrs. Quick was born March 2, 1916 in Mooresville, NC to the late Frank and Oakley Blackwelder. She was long time member of the First Presbyterian Church, the church circle and enjoyed playing Bridge. She was preceded in death by her husband Marshall, a son Gerald (Jerry), four brothers, and one sister.</p>
<p>She is survived by a son Marshall (Tony) and wife Vicki of Sanford, a daughter-in-law Sandra Quick of Morehead City, NC and two grandsons Marshall A. Quick and Carson Wicker Quick.</p>
<p>In lieu of flowers memorial may be made to First Presbyterian Church 203 Hawkins Ave. Sanford, NC.</p>
<p>The family will receive friends at the home of Tony and Vicki.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Erma Juanita Levine Henry</strong>,  was born on September 17, 1934 in Newport, KY, and she passed away on March 23, 2012 at the age of 77 near her daughter&#8217;s home in Montgomery Village, MD.  Mrs. Henry lived a well-traveled life and was beloved by friends and family alike.</p>
<p>Mrs. Henry married U.S. Army Soldier James L. Henry of Punxutawney, PA in 1954 and followed him all over the country throughout his military career, making lasting friendships with a variety of people everywhere she lived. Mrs. Henry gave birth to four children and was a phenomenal wife and mother. In addition to her most cherished role as the heart of the family, Mrs. Henry was also a professional career woman, working as an executive assistant and bookkeeper for many organizations. Addionally, Mrs. Henry was an avid reader and an accomplished seamstress. With her beloved husband, Mrs. Henry settled in Sanford, NC in 1996, and called the little town &#8220;home&#8221; for the rest of her days.</p>
<p>Mrs. Henry is survived by her son, James Thomas Henry of Bloomingdale, IL; her daughter, Nanci Jeanne Henry Yelisetty of Montgomery Village, MD; grandsons James Victor Henry, James Ryan Henry, Nick Richard Henry, and Julian Krishna Yelisetty; and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Henry was preceeded in death by her husband, James Louis Henry, who passed in 2009; her son, Richard Louis Henry, who passed in 1986; and an infant daughter, Barbara Henry, who passed in 1961.</p>
<p>A Memorial Service for Mrs. Henry will be held on March 27, 2012 at 2pm at Miller-Boles Funeral Home in Sanford, NC.  Inurnment will follow at Lee Memory Gardens in Sanford.</p>
