Mr. Elwell “Bill” Turner, age 91, died Thursday, January 12, 2012 at his residence.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 11 am Saturday, January 14, 2012 at Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church with Dr. Mark E. Gaskins and Rev. Gilbert W. McDowell officiating. Burial will follow at Buffalo Cemetery.

Mr. Turner was born on May 20, 1920 in Florence, SC to the late J.M. Turner and Hattie Cade Turner.
He was a proud veteran of WWII, a member of the VFW, American Legion, Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge, Sanford Exchange club, and a longtime member of Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church. Mr. Turner was a retired officer with the ABC system and was a long time employee with Miller-Boles Funeral Home. The baseball field on 7th St. was named the “Elwell Turner Field” after him because of his love for the game of baseball.

He was preceded in death by his wife Ella Lee Turner who he married on August 31, 1940. He is survived by his children, Billy Ray Turner of Dillon, SC, Randy Turner and wife Barbara of Broadway, Gwen T. McAllister and husband David of Charlotte, NC, two grandchildren, Beth Kelly and husband Randy of Broadway, Leigh Ann Murray and husband Don of Madison, NC, three step grandchildren, Bryan High and wife Jennifer of Wilmington, NC, Steve McAllister of Matthews, Chip McAllister of California. Five great grandchildren, Caleb Turner, Alex Murray, Carson Kelly, Dylan Kelly, Raegan Kelly, three step great grandchildren, Harrison High, Nicholas McAllister and Andrew McAllister also survive him.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Friday, January 13, 2012 at Miller-Boles Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Community Home Care and Hospice, 1836 Doctors Dr, Sanford, NC 27330.

    I used to hear stories of how Mr Turner tried to catch a few “moonshiners” in Lee County back in the “old days” My dad happened to be one of those people. When my dad passed in 2001, Mr. Turner said, “I guess we finally caught him”. I have met Mr. Turner quite a few times and he is one man who always had a good attitude about life, no matter the situation. You will be missed dearly.
